A recent assignment took me to a non-descript office building in New Jersey. It houses the secret, underground labs of oil giant BP (British Petroleum). This is where various grades and types of oil is synthesized and developed. It felt like stepping back in time, as many of the instruments appeared to be relics from the 1950s or 1960s. I photographed each lab with a minder, who toured me through the maze of labs, all clean, sterile and eerily empty. I obviously had no clue what any of the machines were and what function they performed. BP’s hidden oil lab, however, certainly piqued my interest.
