Just before Christmas, I photographed the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT where shooter Adam Lanza killed 20 children and 6 adults. The assignment was for People Magazine. Around Newtown, I photographed street corner vigils and mourners gathered inside Christian churches to collectively grieve the senseless loss of life caused by one deranged person.

The portrait above is of third-grader Gianna Routhie, which ran in the magazine. She’s standing outside Newtown High school where President Obama was speaking, while holding a teddy bear and memorial placard commemorating other children like her killed in the shooting. Gianna actually survived the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting! She was hiding in a closet in one the school’s classroom while Adam Lanza violently ravaged the school. It’s difficult to imagine what the experience must have been like, especially as a small child.
