Nathan Weiner, 82, and Robert Bartlett, 78, are soul mates.

“Bobby means everything to him,” said Monica Vickers, Mr. Weiner’s niece, one wintry Sunday while visiting the two at their rundown one-bedroom apartment on East 84th Street.

“We’re like one person,” Mr. Bartlett said as he sat next to Mr. Weiner’s bed, set up against one of the living room walls. Mr. Weiner, who has end-stage dementia, emitted a wet cough every few minutes that hinted at the severity of the pneumonia that threatens his life.
